Second Act grew from a passion of wanting to ease the challenges faced by individuals living with cancer. The founder, Pattie Cagney Sheehan, lost her father, Jack, to pancreatic cancer when he was only 55 years old. Many years later her mother Tess, then age 80, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Pattie watched both her parents struggle to maintain their dignity while never losing their sense of self, or sense of humor. When Tess died two years later Pattie realized the time had come for her second act; helping cancer survivors face the second act of their lives with self-confidence.

She left behind a 25-year career in advertising and marketing to open Second Act, the only fully accredited mastectomy boutique in downtown Chicago that offers wigs and post-surgery bras and prostheses in one location.

Second Act is downtown Chicago’s only accredited cancer recovery boutique carrying wigs, post-breast surgery garments and prostheses in stock, ready for the woman to take home upon completing her visit.
 

At Second Act we recognize the emotional and physical trauma a person experiences when diagnosed with cancer. We also know that recovering from surgery or completing chemotherapy or radiation treatment is not the end of your need for assistance to maintain your self-confidence and positive self-image.

Whether you have been recently diagnosed or have been living with cancer for many years, we provide the products to help you present your best self.

Our products include:

• Wigs and hair pieces as well as a range of hats, turbans, pre-tied scarves and other fun colorful fashion choices.

• Post-surgery and fashion camisoles worn home from the hospital immediately following surgery

  • The post-surgery camisoles include pockets to hold the drainage bulbs associated with surgery. And all camisoles have pockets to hold the woman’s prosthesis.

• Post-surgery bras worn while the surgery site is healing (usually 6 – 8 weeks)

  • Also great for the woman having reconstruction whether she has expanders and has not had her final surgery or while her reconstructive surgery is healing.

• Mastectomy bras in a range of styles, all with pockets to hold the prosthesis securely in place.

• Prostheses for women who have had mastectomies as well as breast conserving surgery include:

  • Breast forms the woman will wear in a pocketed, mastectomy bra.

  • Contact breast forms that adhere to the chest wall and don't require a mastectomy bra.

Accreditation of Second Act is through the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics and Pedorthics, Inc. and Second Act is recognized by Medicare as an approved, DME provider.

Second Act is also under contract as an in-network provider with Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO and Aetna/Cofinity PPO programs. Most post-surgery items are covered by Medicare and/or private insurance for women recently diagnosed and long-term survivors. A physician’s prescription is required.

And, Second Act will file your Medicare and insurance claims on your behalf. However a physician’s prescription is required.
